Nine Sacred Woods of the NE USA

Traditionally, the “nine sacred woods” come from old European Beltane fire lore, most often tied to Celtic practice. Lists vary depending on region and source, but they usually include trees like oak, ash, thorn, birch, rowan, willow, and others that carried deep mythic weight in those landscapes. These woods weren’t random. They were chosen because people lived with them, relied on them, and understood their spirits. When we pull those lists straight across oceans and ecosystems, we’re working with borrowed relationships instead of living ones.
So we like to shift the focus back to the land under our feet. Honoring the spirit of place means working with the trees that actually grow around you, the ones you pass every day, the ones that know your seasons and your storms. Our lives in upstate NY and the surrounding states is where our version of the nine sacred woods comes in.
This isn’t the list. It’s our list, shaped by where we are and what we’ve come to know. The real magic is in building your own set of relationships with the trees around you. Find your nine. Listen to what they offer. And we’d love to hear what ends up on your list, because every place has its own kind of magic waiting to be recognized!
